The London Foundling Hospital opened in 1741, these tokens were used to identify the children in the unlikely event that their parents or guardians came to retrieve them.
These drawings are an ongoing project. I use coloured pencil to make these drawings, as it is a medium associated with childhood. By linking the tokens I make associations for the viewer that in turn relates to the objects that have emotional significance to them. These poignant artefacts inspired Dickens and have been much written about. They are lost scraps separated from their other half evoke narratives of loss and abandonment. Scraps of material, a hazelnut, padlocks and necklaces; these orphaned objects hold the secrets of the children of the Foundling Hospital.
